1. Hemp wellness products are available over-the-counter, without a prescription.

Hemp is healthy and helps restore your internal balance and reduce inflammation. Hemp can help reset and calm an overactive immune system, sensitive gut, and inflamed sources of pain.

Hemp oil contains the best-known source of Omega oils, in the perfect ratio for optimum health, and all the essential fatty acids we need. Hemp flowers contain terpenes, flavonoids and phytocannabinoids found in medicinal cannabis - but not the psychoactive THC.

2. Access legal medicinal cannabis from a specialist clinic or your own doctor.

Any New Zealand doctor may prescribe medicinal cannabis products to any person for any reason. This includes tourists and other non-residents. The most common reasons are sleep, pain and anxiety.

We have partnered with Access Cannabis to provide a doctor call-back service. With this low-cost service, no appointments are necessary. Simply ask us for a call back, sit back and relax. 

Consultations are done over the phone or video (telehealth). Initial consults are $40, or less if you qualify for ACC or MSD funding. Repeat consults are $30.

3. Prescribed cannabis is cheaper than you may think.

Once prescribed, obtain your medicinal cannabis directly from the doctor/clinic (which may offer delivery) or from your preferred pharmacy. Approved products include oral oils, sublingual drops and flowers (bud).

• Prices are generally coming down and are now similar, or even cheaper, than illicit providers. However prices can vary, and products are not subsidised. Patients typically need to pay the full cost.
• Some insurers will cover the doctor consultations but may require a GP referral. Some individual patients have received funding from ACC, MSD or Pharmac.
• Prescriptions for THC products are limited to 1 month supply, with 2 repeats. CBD products can have a 3-month prescription, with 2 more repeats. 
• Doctors may require periodic check ups. Changing product may require a new prescription.

4. Legal users have legal protections.

Patients with prescriptions have rights and can possess and use their medicinal cannabis in public, drive if not impaired, and travel with it. 

• The product container is labelled with the patient name, doctor details and date, product dosage and any restrictions. It is your proof of being legal so we recommend carrying it if you intend to medicate. Alternatively, keep a picture on your phone of the label.  
• NZ's Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Act has an exemption for vaping prescribed medicinal cannabis, so medicinal cannabis flower can be vaped indoors (if the premise occupier allows it - it's still their place and you should ask politely). The Misuse of Drugs Act's prohibition on allowing a premise to be used also does not apply to prescribed medicinal cannabis. That's why The Hempstore can provide a safe area for patients to medicate at the front of our store. 
• Legal defences are available for driver and workplace testing (just like other prescribed drugs). 
• Legally travel while carrying products prescribed in NZ including ferries and domestic airports and also travel to and from Australia and the Cook Islands (up to 1 month supply for THC products, or up to 3 months supply for CBD products).
• Patients undergoing palliation also have a legal defence for obtaining, possessing and using illicit cannabis.
