If you have requested a callback from a specialist cannabis doctor, please read the information below so your upcoming consultation can best focus on your health and treatment needs.
Before your consultation
- Have ready a brief list of your current medical conditions, medications, and the symptoms you want help with.
- Think about goals — what you hope medicinal cannabis will help with (pain, sleep, anxiety, etc.).
- Prepare questions about side effects, dosing, interactions with other medicines, and treatment duration.
Timeframe for a callback
- Expect a callback usually within 1–3 days.
- The call may appear as No Number or an unfamiliar number on your phone.
- If the doctor cannot reach you, they will send an email—check your inbox and spam folder.
How the consultation works
- Consultations are normally done by phone or secure video (telehealth) and follow the same clinical process as a GP or specialist consult.
- A limited number of in‑person appointments may be available; these can have a longer wait time.
- The doctor will assess your needs, discuss options, and — if appropriate — issue a prescription.
Cost
- Medicinal cannabis is not funded by the government.
- Initial consult: $40, or less if you qualify for ACC or MSD funding.
- Repeat consults: $30.
- Payment is due at the time of the consultation and can be made by card over the phone or by internet/phone banking.
Product information and pricing
- New Zealand regulations restrict marketing of medicinal cannabis products, so we cannot provide product prices or availability in promotional materials.
- Generally, prescribed products are broadly comparable to or cheaper than what is found on the illicit market. As a rough guide, patients can expect to budget around $100 per 10g of dry flower, but prices vary by product and supplier.
- Products commonly prescribed include CBD oils, THC oils, dry flowers for vaping or homemade preparations, and balanced products that contain both CBD and THC.
- During your consultation you can ask the doctor about specific product details such as strengths, terpene profiles, and recommended uses.
How prescriptions are dispensed
- Doctors usually dispense in‑house to save you time and reduce costs.
- Typical same‑day workflow: morning consult → dispensed that day → courier pickup early afternoon → overnight delivery where available.
- Afternoon or evening consults are usually dispensed the following day.
- You may also request the prescription be sent to your preferred pharmacy; this will incur an additional prescription fee, and pharmacy prices can vary.
Delivery and collection
- Medicinal cannabis is a controlled drug and is delivered by courier to an address where someone can sign on delivery.
- If you are in Auckland CBD, collection from the doctor’s office may be possible subject to availability; ask during your consult.
Requesting a repeat prescription
- To request a repeat of the same prescription, text the number shown on the label attached to your medication.
- Text the word "REPEAT" and your name and you will receive instructions for payment and delivery confirmation.
- You can request two repeats without another in‑person or telehealth consult; further repeats require a follow‑up consult.
- To change your prescription to another product/s, text "CHANGE" and your name and you will receive instructions for arranging a new consultation.
