1. Anyone in New Zealand can get a prescription for medicinal cannabis.
Any doctor may prescribe cannabis to anyone, for any reason (including tourists and visitors). The most common reasons are sleep, pain and anxiety. Products include oral oils and dry flowers (bud, for tea or for vaping). Information about NZ’s medicinal cannabis scheme and a full list of currently approved products can be found at the Medical Cannabis Agency website. We recommend talking to your own doctor first, or you can see a specialist clinic below. Check their websites for times they have available. Appointments are often over video or phone. There may be a longer waiting time for in person consultations.

2. Legal cannabis is now cheaper than you may think.
Once prescribed, obtain your medicinal cannabis from the doctor/clinic (which may offer delivery) or from your preferred pharmacy. Approved products include oral oils, sublingual drops and flowers (bud).
- Products are not subsidised, so patients typically need to pay the full cost.
- Prices are generally coming down, and can vary so it pays to shop around (ie, compare clinics and pharmacies).
- Some insurers will cover the initial consultations but may require a GP referral. Some individual patients have received funding from ACC, MSD or Pharmac however this is very rare.
3. Live like it’s legal, with legal protections.
Patients with prescriptions can consume their medicinal cannabis in public, drive if not impaired, and travel with it. Patients undergoing palliation also have a legal defence for obtaining illicit cannabis.
